Banjo-Kazooie's Spiritual Successor: YOOKA-LAYLEE

Post by Count Mario on Thu Apr 30, 2015 10:17 pm

The kickstarter for this game begins tomorrow (May 1) on the official website.

http://www.playtonicgames.com/introducing-yooka-laylee/

I have to say, I've been craving an open-world platformed for quite some time. I hope this delivers and gets enough kickstart moolah.

I'm considering contributing to the Kickstarter.  And then I realize I don't care about Banjo-Kazooie. And then I realize I should.  And then I wanna donate.  And then it cycles lol.

I just really hope Grant Kirkhope composes.

Looks cool except the main characters, their design turns me off to the game.

I found that out shortly after posting, because I read on JonTron's twitter that Grant was involved.  Jon then got a possibly-real, possibly-fake offer to do voices from PlayTonic...

Personally, the character designs disgust me.

Also, JonTron seems to be busy with a YouTube project.

Yeah, that same day he had the twitter conversation about doing voices. So he's got a bunch in the pipeline right now.

Multiply it by about 1.5. With a long way to go, it could very well end up as the highest-grossing Kickstarter.

Star Citizen says, "hi" while sitting on $80 million.  But, I'm glad they're getting success.

Star Citizen wasn't funded on Kickstarter though IIRC, especially not the whole 90 million it's at now lol

It doesn't matter where it was funded, crowd funding is the same thing no matter where it happens.  If we're talking initial crowd funding deadlines, SC on it's initial crowd funding calender amassed $6.2 million.  Making it the must successful crowd funded game of all time.  To take the number one spot, they would have to do more than Mighty Number 9's goal, because MN9 isn't top, it's second.

I said Kickstarter specifically, so I was talking just Kickstarter. Nothing will ever come close to SC in terms of overall funding lol

I personally don't care for specific crowd funding sites, the way I see it is that "kickstarter" is just a buzz word for "crowd funding."  It rolls of the tongue real nice, it doesn't matter if you're on IndieGoGo, or Kickstarter.  You might as well just generalize all of crowd funding because it's all the same.

More or less, yes. At the same time, that logic almost killed Nintendo in the 90s when Nintendo was so colloquial for gaming that they almost lost all their trademarks because the word became too common. It's happened toother brands too, but I forget the really notable one where it DID happen. Point is, I try not to bastardize the names of brands. That's just me, though.

Doing it in a space where each company makes their own unique content is one though.  Thinking of it all has the same thing does have it's way of undermining creativity since there's a different mind in a different studio doing a different thing.  I understand what you mean, but crowd funding is still crowd funding now matter where the money comes from.  It's not like Kickstarter, or IndieGoGo is making original content.  But, you can't say that playing Mario is the same thing as playing Final Fantasy.  It's two different creative I.P's that belong to two different creators and two different companies.

Well, at the same time, PayPal donations all go to the creator, while indiegogo requires a down payment and Kickstarter requires a full contract to promise a finished product that meets any stretch goals on top of a cut of the funding. Not too different from comparing Nintendo to Sega back in the day. That was kind of my point.

Anyway, semantics. Let's get this back on topic.

I guess the way money is obtained would matter if you have some sort of economics, or business major.  But, I don't have an interest in either of those fields.  The only thing I care about is making a quality product.

the only thing about Star Citizens number is the time period. It went on for over a year, while this game will have less than two months.

Still think Mno.9 is most impressive, as it was during Kickstarters infancy and had the standard 30 days IIRC

At the same time, people seemed much more willing to back stuff during that infancy than nowadays. I mean, name more than a handful of recent Kickstarters that did close to the early ones.

thats cause of all the shady shit that goes down there, and the lack of immediate return. i mean the first, good Kickstarters of that time are only on their way NOW. thats why people are sketchy

on that note 1.5 Mil = Orchestral Score. FUCK YEAH!

Oh I know. My point was more that if people are willing to fork out that money NOW, it might say a bit more than when it was novel.
