If Sony actually had the rights to Crash, they would've done a CG trailer at E3. They did that for a bunch of games anyway, and it would've "won" them E3 for sure in many fans' eyes (even though the Crash game everybody wants would be way too shallow to justify a full-scale release, as shown by countless horribly-selling platforms in the past few years).

According to the masses, it's generally split between Sony and Nintendo. A Crash announcement could've easily turned the tides in Sony's favor for the unsure. You know what I meant lol

Knowing Sony, this article will make it sound like they're referring to crash or sir daniel but, in actuality, they're referring to Kratos or someone like that

Sad but true...

Kratos is still good?

That series stopped being good around the first game, back when the story wasn't garbage and Kratos's anger was justified. The gameplay was only slightly better than Rygar.

God of War can only get you so far, especially since the hack and slash genre is dead. And I don't think Sony will be so quick to jump on GoW after Ascension bombed and cost Sony Super Bowl commercial money on top of a $60 million budget.

I don't know why people wouldn't buy GoW, it's a great franchise way up there with some of the all time greats.

Post by lpool1996moh on Tue Jun 24, 2014 4:31 pm

haha no. its ok and it looks pretty, but its not like other Hack/ games i've played, the wackier ones, it gets boring FAST.

Heck its not even if people will buy the top game (That lost to Metal Gear Rising last time it came out) in a dying genre. its if Sony will blow more cash on a game that gave them horrible horrible losses last time out. at least PASBR, a game paraded around as a flop by many around the same time, made a small profit. Ascension was a colossal failure. As DP said, it made losses on just generally building the game, it also had a superbowl trailer. heck it was a long SuperBowl trailer. most people stick to 30 seconds, as that costs a fortune, all of the US will see that 30 seconds, but no Sony paid for 4 times that. two minutes worth. and it was a live action trailer with a lot of CG and a licensed soundtrack. it was quite possibly the most expensive trailer sony have ever done, definitely for a game. and the game didn't even break even for production, let alone covering that catastrophe. if Sony take a hint God of War is at least on a break if not outright dead.

it should be dead too, they should have ended it with 3. Kratos fulfilled his ambition, was humanised towards the end and died a sort of noble death. then the after credits scene they just had to do that. it was done, and well too, GoW 1-3 were great (2 was the best blah blah) but between collections and spin offs...its run its course.

but enough of that. the Classic character is probably Sir Dan or Parrappa. with both Rhythm (How?) and adventury dungeon games on the Up, along with the spotlight PASBR brought. but who cares about that

What crazy bastard is making Knack a franchise?

If you don't consider GoW up with with the all-time greats, then that's all I need to read.

The original is one of the all time greats. 2 is. 3 maybe. the others no. the franchise as a whole? definitely not.

Its just a loss waiting to happen in todays market and it should at least be shelved.

yeah theres a problem with that game

its only on the U. its doomed to sell poorly

Dragon dead genre doesn't mean people don't make the games, some people do just clutch onto em after all. no it means the games won't sell and just aren't popular anymore.

which is sad. i love a good hack/ game

Bayo2 is actually the poster child for me. Nintendo is so behind that they think it's still relevant! Lol

Jokes aside, if Sony's previously number one mascot abso-fucking-lutely BOMBS after a Super Bowl ad campaign, nobody's gonna profit on the genre. DmC would've sold badly (probably WORSE actually) had it not had New Dante. Bayonetta is niche for a reason. Revengeance is the only one that turned a profit in recent years (unless you count Guacamelee as hack and slash), and the Metal Gear license is likely a big part of the reason.

I don't mind the genre at all, but objectively speaking, a hack and slash alone cannot sell well at $60. Two hack and slash games (like Bayo 1+2) at $60 is something more appetizing, as is a multigenre hack-slash game like FFXV. But even tacking on multiplayer didn't help Kratos.

DmCs main reasons of doing badly were the lack of good advertising (riling up the fans doesnt count), and pissing off its old series fans, but it is unknown whether it wouldve done better as a sequel or not (if i remember correctly 4 sold great for a niche game)

as for bayonetta 2 we have yet to see how well it does nintendo is doing decent with its advertising so far so i dont know how it will turn out

and i wouldnt consider that being a dead genre old school Isometric RPGs are a dead genre compared to that hack and slash games are doing amazing (there hasnt been an old school isometric rpg in about 10 years XD). H&S games are just becoming more niche.

Bayo sold terribly. There's a reason it's a cult classic.

Look, I love tedious hack-and-slashers. My favorite series is Dynasty Warriors, after all.

The only real appeal to God of War is the aspect of feeling powerful, which tends to be a prevalent reason to play these sort of games. But the others also have a good story, and more charm than ripping heads off bodies and shoving them into a cyclop's eye so he'll smash a centaur at the joining of his man and horse parts.

Well, and also the Greek thing. Which is honestly the only reason I played them, since I love Greek mythology.

There's a big reason the last game bombed. Kratos is a terrible character whose only aspect is anger. He used to have our sympathy for being tricked and we felt his pain, but starting in the second game that just stopped and left only the rage. That was explained as a side effect of opening Pandora's Box, but that's just weak. There was also that stuff with Pandora herself, but that didn't last long.

But the gameplay is bad. Even if they get back to characterizing him decently, they've done all the big stuff so there's no draw, and the weak gameplay can't save it.

DMC4 also came out several years ago, Dragon. By modern count, no hack and slash game has succeeded besides MGR. An big advertising budget is nonexistent because the genre's appeal is limited to that niche, and with games getting exponentially more expensive to develop since DMC4, it makes sense that none of them have succeeded. Bayo2 wouldn't succeed even if it were on all five platforms.

You're right, isometric is dead (outside of Bastion and its spiritual ), but that's due to hardware evolution; like the collectathon, there's no reason for that genre to still exist in its original state. With hack and slash games, they're dead for a different reason. The audience doesn't exist in enough of a size for the genre to support itself in the modern era. UNLESS, there's a good budget plan that's stuck to. Then it's possible to profit.
