Steam Summer Sale 2014

Post by this_is_marko on Fri Jun 20, 2014 2:01 pm

Not sure how many of you are into PC gaming but I figured I'd let everyone know that the Steam Summer Sale has started and is going until June 30th

I hate RPG maker, because they making you pay for 20+ year old graphics.  I would like it if I could import code from it to other engines though.  Although, I don't know much about that engine.

That comment is pretty questionable from an objective standpoint, I must say. Old school pixel graphics are often all an indie developer can use, since decent 3D models cost a fortune. Look at all the horrible looking XBL indies out there lol.

From an opinion standpoint, I can get the issue with pixel graphics, though, so long as there's empathy for the reasoning behind most developers' choice to stay 2D.

With CryEngine and Unreal 4 now monthly services, obtaining those models is easier then ever.  At the price of $70-$300 for pixel graphics is highly unreasonable.

Seeing it for 20 bucks after seeing it being 68 bucks was a freaking steal. How could I not? Besides, I heard CryEngine was hard as balls to figure out and it's a FPS engine. Might as well go with something simple and easy to use.

I go $10 at most for RPG Maker.  Personally, I would build the game in Unity, or Blender.  Then during the final months of development, buy the services and import the game to one of those engines to pretty most of everything up.

Blade nailed it; it's that price because it's one of the few game dev aids that gives anybody the ability to make a game, and it IS the only one for RPGs. Considering most RPG fans prefer the old style to the new, super HD models, it makes sense that they'd keep it in the style that hooked many fans in. The engines you named require coding knowledge, something you can do without when using RPG Maker (and IIRC, RPG Maker can teach you code as well!).

I know they do, which is why I wish I could import the code from RPG Marker.  Other then that, I would rather just teach myself to code rather then pay a anything more than $10 for that engine.

Very likely you could export the code somehow, but it'd taje more work than would be desirable. Something to look into though.

your wrong about the graphics anaconda as the newest "realistic" set of graphics get outdated stylized games will always look great (hell its almost entirely the reason i picked up borderlands at first)
pixel art is a different type of graphics but it can still look great if done correctly (take for example Megaman X/Zero/battle network series or pokemon.

When I'm being asked to pay $70 for an engine though, it better be in 3D.  Other then that, I have no interest in outdated pixel art games.

Your first RPG almost HAD to be on the PS1 if you're saying that. I know of very few gamers who started in the pixel era who insult pixel graphics, especially when talking about RPGs.

I started with Late PS1 (Mother didn't want me addicted to video games, felt if she waited i wouldn't be lolnope) and i love Pixel Graphics. Retro and stylized graphics will never be outdated, but the hyper realistic stuff of today will be outdated in a few months, especially considering we are at the start of a Gen. who knows in a couple of years we could have games that look as good as Quantic Dreams games whilst having an actual Gameplay.

I think that stuff is ugly, and my first RPG was Final Fantasy VII for the PSOne.

Yeah, I figured it'd be VII, since that was the first big polygonal RPG. Tends to explain any disdain for pixels.

You did NOT just use a prerendered image as your argument. I refuse to believe anybody is that dense.

Image A also costs several magnitudes of money more, and helped get Square hated worldwide for several years. Hell, most of the FF PS1 fans hate anything after X because of the graphics trumping the gameplay and story.

That don't matter, it still fits my point that it looks better.

Of all my years of playing Final Fantasy, I haven't played an FF with gameplay as good as LR.  Like it's more action-based style of strategy and I like that it puts more focus into questing to level over farming random NPC's.

in 2 years LR will be considered Ugly thus nobody will play it (And its not that good anyway. best of the trilogy but thats not saying anything) but Pixelated games you can always go back and play because the majority of the decent ones look easy on the eye. the are simple and easy to understand, colourful and just nostalgic (Even if you never played that game before). for examples i point to Minecraft and Terraria. as open as the games are without that artstyle, people would put it down as it got outdated (As it stands with the game slowing down as far as i can tell, its been what 5 years since alpha?)

And as DP said you used a pre rendered image. find in gameplay shots to make your point. and don't pull that crap.

also that was Lightning therefore it does not look better. because its Lightning, the mere sight of here makes Final Fantasy fans of all types blow chunks.

If you love LR so much, why do you seem to have a vendetta against XV, a game in exactly that style? Also "it doesn't matter," proves how weak your argument is lol

Well considering that graphics on the next-gen look just as good, or better than that pre-rendered image.  It doesn't.  As for Final Fantasy XV, from what they've shown so far I don't like the characters.
