Hyrule Warriors

Post by Piratemankelly on Thu May 22, 2014 10:06 am

So, this was announced a good long while ago with almost no info for months. It's a Dynasty Warriors Zelda game.

But about a week ago, they said some minor gameplay details. As per usual for a Koei game, afterwards, a ton of info surged out of nowhere.

So, what we know:

  • Link and Impa are playable. Link's primary style is the Sword & Shield, and Impa uses a large sword. Like DW7 onwards, you can have another weapon equipped as a secondary moveset. We know of the Fire Rod and Bombs. I believe you can also hold onto and use a Red Potion.
  • Villains: Well, they definitely aren't Zelda like. The main villain is Shia, who is a very... uh... "Koei" girl. First Zelda girl since Veran to have overt sex-appeal. Varga is the "scorching berserker," and he has a helmet that looks like Volvagia. It looks like his arm turns into a dragon's, and he has a spear. He also looks incredibly Koei. Then there's Wizro, who resembles a fatter version of the Ghost Hunter from OoT and MM. I like him.
  • For enemies, we've seen Bokoblins, Lizalfos, and Dodongos.
  • Stages: We see Hyrule field / castle along with the some kind of temple. Another is more desolate, and has something to do with Lanayru (time). Someone told me it's Lanayru Gorge, like from SS. There's also a Crystal Switch visible.
  • Story. Oh boy, it's like a fanfaction. Shia is a witch in charge of guarding the Triforce or soemthing. Link is a Hyrule soldier (this part I like). She develops a crush on him, and gets jealous about his closeness to Zelda. An unknown evil corrupts her and she rebels against Hyrule with her minions Varga and Wizro.

...I don't even wanna format those pics correctly.

Some other key details:
It's playable at E3.
It's 70% complete.
Team Ninja is also involved.
Bombs have some other effect besides just being able to damage. It's not explained what in Famitsu though.
Aonuma has commented on his surprise at the amount of playable characters.
It hits shelves August 14 in Japan. Still no international release date.
Two-Player mode moves P1's screen to the GamePad.

And I'm calling Ganon now. I hadn't heard the story description before but now I'm sure of it. That's exactly what would happen (and has happened many times before) in a Zelda game ("Surprise it's me behind it all!"

More info via a bunch of Siliconera articles:

This is the first time Team Ninja and Omega Force have really collab'd on a game. Omega Force has the Musou stuff down, but Team Ninja's lending some expertise to 1v1 fighting, which is something that Musou games generally suck at. The main programmer is a member of Team Ninja, the director has a background in DW games, and the main planner held that same position for Pirate Warriors (which, from my experience, all One Piece bias aside, is one of the best Musou games you can get).

Of course, Aonuma is very closely tied into the development of the game. He's made several comments, like the above surprise of the character amount which, according to the articles, is actually rather large. He also expressed surprise at the choices, and stated that he himself made no actual requests.

He's been working with the developers of the game to establish what they can and cannot do with the Zelda series. Like a good while ago before LBW came out, he said he wanted to try to break away from the traditional format while keeping true to the roots, which is very evident in this game, but also applies for the unannounced Zelda U.

But that's the exact reason he wanted the have a Warriors Zelda game; because he himself can't make it so. Going back to the roster comment, he said that his staff would get mad at him if they did something like that. But that's all good, because this isn't the next mainseries Zelda title, as he reiterated.

He also commented on the Fire Rod, saying it isn't really something from Zelda, and if it was, it wouldn't be used the same way. Which confuses me a little, considering the Fire Rod is in fact a Zelda item. I mean, I get that the mainseries Fire Rod acts nothing like this one, but that's what the second half of his sentence says, so... yeah.

Oh yeah, and we have some info on boss fights. The Koei guys flat out admitted that they suck at boss fights compared to mainseries Zelda, and that thee bosses will be more like waves where you attack fodder and hit the boss with a charged attack. Yeah, extremely disappointing, imo, especially considering Mobile Armors in Gundam function perfectly like regular bosses. However, there is some hope, because it's also said that you can strategically use items to hurt the boss.

Aside from the demo at E3, they will show another trailer, revealing new playable characters.

Oh, and my favorite part: EVERY CHARACTER GETS THE SIGNATURE "TREASURE CHEST" OPENING ANIMATION!

I think it's gonna be canon. It could easily line up anywhere between SS and OoT. At first I thoought it'd be afterMinish Cap bit before Four Swords, but based on the image of Skyloft falling into Hyrule, it's most likely the Hylian Civil War. Chaos about the world "ending," reveal of the Triforce to the people, and a giant war. It just lines up, and the time period is very vague when explained in OoT.

Re: Hyrule Warriors

Some are thinking it's the direct game before OoT, since the villains line up with OoT bosses. Some theorize that these guys get reborn into OoT bosses.

Wizro has some resemblances to Bongo Bongo, and Varga has the firedragon motif with Volvagia's head as a helmet, but personally I don't agree that this. I just feel like it'd devalue some of the fan-lore behind the characters. Part of what makes Bongo Bongo so great is that we have no idea what his origins are. Is he the man that saw everything? Did he live under the well? Etc, etc.

Conversely, most people think this is pre-SS, which I don't really doubt. However, the Hylian Civil War makes the most sense, although we haven't actually seen any proof of Hyrule knights fighting Hyrule knights (excluding Link training). However, we've barely seen anything so far, so it's WAY too early to count it out.

I think the OoT influence on all the new characters shown so far speaks a lot about the possibility of it being the Civil War. Though, it'd have to be the beginning of it, nit the end, since if it took place at the end we'd have two simultaneous Links (as OoT's would've been born and left in the Kokiri Forest by his dying mom).

Pre-SS doesn't make sense to me since it's implied Link is IN Hyrule by the castle and every piece of info, and Skyloft was where almost all the "Hylians" went, leaving Demise to launch his first invasion from the ground below. Plus there wouldn't be a Hyrule, since Hylia/Zelda and SS Link we're the first to call it that.

Yeah, it's not pre-SS. Hylia herself lifted Skyloft into the sky during the conflict with Demise. There was no Hyrule yet.

However, the Goddess Statue still fell in SS. Chances are that was an oversight, but it could easily just be fixed by saying they rebuilt another statue since it was so important to them.

If we take into account how Shia was guarding the Triforce, then it would provide even more evidence of taking place during the Hyrulian Civial War since that was the main goal of the conflict and is almost always protected by being in the Sacred Realm from OoT onwards. However, I thought this game was already declared noncanon though.

That was what I thought too Count (about Cia/Shia).

As for its story, Aonuma's put his full support behind it so they could make a game that he wasn't good enough to make (not an insult to him as he's immensely talented, just essentially what he said). I don't believe it was ever declared canon or not either. If Miyamoto and Aonuma both fully overwatched this thing, then it's a safe bet the story is canon. It's likely just a Ratchet A4O-esque spinoff with story merit.

Edit: The quote you're thinking of, Count, was when Iwata revealed it by saying "this is NOT the next main-series game" to shut up the Zelda fanbase before they flipped shit.

Re: Hyrule Warriors

Post by Piratemankelly on Sat May 24, 2014 1:09 am

Yeah. Aonuma being so buddy-buddy with the guys at Koei is actually really surprising me. I mean, both of them have said stuff kinda saying "yeah Warriors isn't as good," though I'm saying that without providing context. Nonetheless. I didn't think he'd give them so much liberty, and Cia (I thought I'd shoehorn that localization name-change in there) and Varga are so, SO Musou and so... not Zelda. But this is a good sign for the next Zelda game, especially with the enormous changes the LBW rental system and open-worldy second half brought.

Now, there isn't really a reason why it shouldn't be canon, unless in-game the story contradicts something. The CDi games are noncanon because they sucked and nobody wants to remember they existed, but take Link's Crossbow Training. Gameplay aside, it's treated as a noncanon sidegame because it's more or less a very skimpy retelling of Twilight Princess. That's the same reason most of the Zelda mangas aren't canon; they go against the games. Case in point, the MM manga (which I did thoroughly enjoy) portrayed Happy Mask Salesman as outright evil, gave Majora a full backstory, and made Fierce Deity Link even more OP than in the game, hence why it isn't considered part of the actual story.

However, Hyrule Warriors has the potential to cover literally any other point in Zelda history. So long as it doesn't take place during or contradict any existing canon, if it never gets referenced in another Zelda game or merch, the argument for its canonicity is moot. That said, having it be an official telling of a significant point in Zelda lore, like the Civil War OoT mentions, is actually a very good idea.

Re: Hyrule Warriors

The point of the game, sales aside, is go do something a regular Zelda couldn't do; the whole "violent war" angle is exactly that. And to me, it's canon since Nintendo openly acknowledges its existence. The only non-canon games that have that are the Tingle games, which are expressly-stated as non-canon. Since the timeline isn't so much one canon as three, even if the main story covers every major Zelda angle, one could just branch off a fourth string. Something tells me the other Zelda games will be in what-if scenarios rather than the main story though.

Re: Hyrule Warriors

Post by Piratemankelly on Tue May 27, 2014 1:58 am

I saw on GameXplain there was a new promo art picture of a place resembling Eldin Volcano. Wasn't quite as straightforward to find it, but also, not too hard to, either.

http://www.gengame.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/hyrulewarriors_art01.jpg

We can see some wooden structures like lookouts and fences, which I recall being not too far away from the entrance to the Earth Temple in SS. And like magic, there appears to be a large gate next to the wooden structures that could potentially be the entrance to it (or OoT's Fire Temple, or.. heck, they're probably the same place).

Yeah, I definitely think this game takes place between SS & OoT. I mean, we basically have that established, though there is a pretty substantial time gap. But there are clearly things to attribute to either / or. For instance, the Bokoblins are SS. The Lizalfos were SS in the reveal trailer, but now they look like a cross between OoT's and SS's.

http://a51274b2bfd36c9eba6f-b2cc59e0ef85511aa5ed3ad88986348d.r9.cf1.rackcdn.com/15114/008sysdl.jpg

Additionally, on a piece of art, we clearly see OoT Stalchildren from Hyrule Field, nighttime as a kid.
http://zeldawiki.org/File:Zelda_Musou_Official_Art.jpg

Besides that, there are is a clear reference with Varga and Volvagia. However, I'm betting it's simply a nod rather than anything meaningful, though the guys at GameXplain believe it's Volvagia's human form. However, they brought up an interesting idea:

Volvagia was said to have been sealed in the Fire Temple by a Goron wielding the Megaton Hammer. Well, what if, on the Eldin Volcano level, a Goron character (we know there'll be one, come on) holding the Megaton Hammer defeats Varga in a Temple-like area of the map? Or, rather, if Link is simply made an honorary-Goron like in OoT and the legend is just told as Goron doing it, and the fact that Link was not actually being one of them being forgotten?

In any case, if it does end up being a connection, I really hope they leave Wizro out of any OoT mythos. Adding something to Volvagia is fine because his story was cut-and-dry and this would add to it, but Bongo Bongo is a mystery and attributing Wizro to him would suck. Besides, the biggest and really only similarity they have is the eye.

Oh, and there was also some extra story details. I don't have a link for it (it's in GameXplain's discussion), but apparently a Link from a long time ago split an evil being into 4 parts, 3 of which being sealed outside of Time or the Light Realm or some crap, and 1 of them in the Master Sword. Of course, this is the evil that's controlling Cia. That's going to be covered in the opening cutscene (the stained-glass stuff). They mentioned that the silhouette of what looks like Cia is split into four by the chains, indicating that that isn't Cia at all but the actual evil (making the evil being another female humanoid, possibly Cia's ancestor imo). Or, more likely, it's just coincidental with the numbers and it's just her being bound by it.

It's noteworthy that the Link and Zelda in that scene don't match any known incarnations of the pair, meaning that whoever they defeated isn't Demise (seeing as how SS Link killed him) or Vaati (as early-Zelda-lore Toon Link sealed him). Assumign the game takes place before OoT, it probably wouldn't be Ganon/dorf. It doesn't technically rule out Majora, although I sincerely hope they won't ruin the mystique and wonder behind that game by fucking with its ambiguity.

Re: Hyrule Warriors

There's never been anything to say that Ganon didn't come back before OoT at any point, so that's still the safest bet as to who the big bad is. Likely, it's pig Ganon and NOT Dorf, as Ganon would then have some reason for becoming Dorf when he's reborn some time before OoT (as then he'd realize that his true form would fail more easily, after learning that twice in SS and then HW).

I'm fine with backstory on the OoT bosses; that actually makes things MORE interesting to me than less. People tend to put the OoT bosses on a pedestal, but I've never particularly cared for them because there's really nothing too deep about any of them besides Twinrova and Phantom Ganon. Adding the connection to the most popular Zelda would only help HW out, and if that means a better Volvagia explanation and an understanding of any sort just as to what the fuck Bongo Bongo is, I'm game. The thought alone of canon ties to lore legitimately hypes me up more than gameplay could with this game.

Nintendo talked about unlocking characters by playing through the story, and upgrading via spending Rupees. Neither of these are remotely surprising, being that this is a Musou game, but hey, it's something. Also, because Nintendo's the one telling us instead of Koei. (Note: I didn't actually read the article yet; my mom's computer sucks, and I don't feel like going upstairs to mine).

No voice acting confirmed. One guy was complaining about that, saying the tradition is dumb and you NEED voice acting for a Warriors game or you'll miss everything. Considering the fact that a bunch of the past ones were all in Japanese, and that the series is incredibly tedious so you don't even need to look at the screen half the time, I just laughed.
