So it's down to Sony and Microsoft for control of the VR market. (Microsoft's had leaks recently of proprietary software for the same tech, unsurprisingly.) Or, more likely, it becomes another niche extension of motion gaming now with no PC equivalent to keep it game-focused.

I don't agree with this, there doesn't need to be a PC version to keep it game focused.  I mean, there were plenty of projects on the Oculus that weren't games.  It was an open format to put anything on it, not just video games.

You can disagree all you want, casual gamers are now the market for all three, rather than just one (Microsoft). The core doesn't trust Facebook, generally, and nobody can seriously say Project Morpheus ever had a chance without Rift giving it games to port. Not with Sony's track record of supporting projects, like Move, Wonderbook, the Vita (lol), all in the last five years. With a high starting price ($300 is likely as low as it'll start), only PC gamers were gonna consider a VR machine without a pack-in deal on PS4, and now that the PC market is fleeing, what does that leave? A definite market of 10 million by the end of the year on PS4, and that's IF it launches by then. The best case I see is if all the Rift developers all flock to Morpheus, which could lead to temporary success, but that's it. Likely, we'll see Morpheus quickly become a counter to Google Glass as Rift is going to, because that's sort of the underlying MO for this all existing.

It's too early for me to draw a conclusion. Instagram is yet to die, and integration of the Oculus could not end up being attached to facebook if used on other games. If anything, I hope this means it ends up being easier to find and cheaper to acquire.

Ideally, Zuckerberg holds to his word and it's just them funding the project more. But I can't put too much trust in someone who sells peoples' information to ad companies

Would it be too harmful if they sold your gaming preferences?

Then again, they wouldn't just stick to gaming details, considering that they could save all kind of information with that thing. Paranoia is kinda justified...

As I expected, Sony doesn't plan on using first party teams much on Morpheus. Which is fine by me.
