Re: 8th Generation General Discussion

It's the sort of deal I'll jump on, because Ratchet has pushed me into getting a PS4, and why not fork out $50 for a unique model and game too? I'm confident Sony won't get cock like they did after the PS2, because they'll never be able to pull off that kind of lead again; as such, I'm not worried too much about them falling out of line like they did in 2006.

And Vice, nobody mentioned the Wii U in this conversation. And we're still without further data to discuss MK8, so we'll leave that to bed until the sales come in for last week.

Oh god no lol. No way the Wii U's 6 million and change would overtake the PS4 next month. Or at all for that matter. Sony's won, that's a fact. Even the disKinected XBO model is WAY below the stock PS4 on all sales charts, not to mention the Destiny bundle. Nintendo is right in between the two in terms of sales, and month to month actually seems to line up to match the XBO even after Kinect is removed. That likely won't last, but for the time being, Nintendo may end the year in second with Smash countering any exclusive push the XBO might have from its fall lineup. (I say exclusive because all multiplats are leaning PS4 when it comes to hardware pushes, to such a level that XBO hardware pushes almost seem negligible from multiplats.)

Believe it or not, I think Microsoft could be in more trouble than Nintendo here, because they still have to fight as a primary console. Until the exclusives roll Microsoft's way, I can't see this current setup changing in the near future. End of 2015? A lot harder to predict, but I'd say Nintendo's probably in third unless Smash somehow pushes a million units in a month so that Nintendo has buffer room.

Mario Kart 8 was the highest-selling game for the week ending June 7. The bundle is still tough to find, the Wii U is still over 100% above weekly averages, and it's outselling the XBO in every region. That said, I'm curious as to how E3 will change the following week's figures, as I've heard a lot of people jumping on each console after their respective E3 performances. Mostly PS4 and Wii U, but the DisKinected model should help boost XBO sales a bit (though it was only in the 50s on Amazon's charts, way behind both other consoles).

The Wii U's sells and Mario Kart 8 take a massive drop in sells.  Just as I said.

No more a drop than Watch Dogs had on every console. You were calling for it to drop to bomb levels, but it still pushed more units than anything else and pushed a hefty amount of Wii Us. Anybody can predict a drop week two; that's economics. But you kept playing it up like we'd see 50K sales or lower week two.

People now realize Watch_Dogs sucked, but not everyone and I didn't say bomb levels.  I said it would be a massive drop.  The game only sold well among currently existing Wii U owners as I said too.

That justification doesn't explain the (slightly less than) 300K new Wii U owners out there in the past two weeks. That's a huge boost to console sales (according to Reggie, and take it lightly because Reggie, we're still at a 400% worldwide hardware increase over previous weeks.) So it sold well among the non-owners as well. Otherwise we wouldn't have had a hardware skyrocket like we did.

You can look at the good, but the way I see it is that Nintendo's sales dropped over 340%.

That's true for every game from week one to two. A massive drop is basic economics lol. Since launch, the Wii U has jumped considerably, selling more in two weeks than it probably had in the previous two months or longer, and pushing past the Xbox One even more than it had already been in the areas where both are released (and obviously Japan as well).

I always forget about the actual term lol. I tend to remember it when talking about graphics since I firmly believe we're very close to the complete cap on what our polygons can accomplish.

Nintendo is FINALLY getting its Wii U Virtual Console act together. Soon, we'll be getting N64 games in addition to the NES, SNES, GB(C/A), and DS games.

I was skeptical before, but I think we might just see GC games soon too.

Edit: And now Capcom has announced 15 VC titles out of the blue. Maybe Nintendo IS interested in getting Capcom. I'm 100% skeptical about that, but coincidences aren't something that happen often in this industry. I'm even more skeptical that Sony would let it happen without a fight (MS can't do much due to Japanese regulations on outsider trading). Either way the next few months shall be very interesting.

Ahem

http://m.ign.com/articles/2014/06/27/2-million-copies-of-mario-kart-8-have-reportedly-been-sold

Nintendo's investor meeting shows 2 million copies in consumers' hands. This is sold-through, not sold-in, for the record. The game's not a month old, and based on that number, it's still selling 100K a week on the physical market plus however many digital sales may be there (looks like 30-50K a week, if Famitsu's Japanese digital figures can be extrapolated to the other two regions based on download trends).

Not bad. Not bad at all.

These are to-date numbers. Based on a basic understanding of economics, anybody can see that the game is still hovering around 100K worldwide per week.

And let me note that MK8 is now the highest-selling exclusive of 2014. Past Titanfall (its XBO numbers at least) and Second Son. Actually, it's the third/fourth (depending on WD's PS4 sales to date) highest selling game period since the PS4 launched. In the 8th gen, only NSMBU, Nintendoland, 3DW, Ghosts PS4, FIFA PS4 (and maybe WD PS4) are higher.

All of those games except Nintendoland and NSMBU will be surpassed in a week or two.

Except for the 300K new Wii U owners in the three weeks of VGchartz numbers we have.

I didn't see you arguing that Infamous only sold well among PS4 owners (a statement just as arguable as the one you keep making without any quantifiable evidence). Stop letting bias hamper cold hard numbers here.

Re: 8th Generation General Discussion

Name me one non-bundled game that succeeded. Titanfall didn't push that many XBOs, and inFamous certainly didn't either.

Over 20% of MK8 owners bought a Wii U for it in the first three weeks of launch. Thats unprecedented; only Pokemon is strong enough to have beaten that upon launch.

Believe whatever makes you feel better about your opinions, but don't try to push that as fact compared to numbers and data that signal otherwise.

Edit: And by non-bundled I mean not including games like Wii Sports and MKWii which were sold as bundles for most of the game's life.

If you saw my edit you'd see what I meant. Titanfall, inFanous (in some regions), etc. have all been bundled. But none of those have sold as well as MK8.
