Should World of Warcraft Go Free-To-Play? No, and Here's Why.

Post by BigBox on Wed Sep 11, 2013 6:32 pm

An example of what, WoW numbers look like for sales of its subscription base and why they never need to go to free-to-play.

15 x 8,000,000 x 12 = $1,440,000,000

When you're raking in that kind of money on a yearly average, free-to-play just seems like a silly joke when your game is subscription based.  This is without taking into consideration of pets and mounts in-game that sometimes sale for as much as $1,000.

oh yeah never go F2P. when it dies (probably when a follow up is announced) then just shove it into a hole and burn it.

Until the income of the game doesn't look like that, free-to-play shouldn't even be considered.  Most people say they should because either, A) They got nothing to talk about.  Or B) They're just trying to sound like they know what they're saying, when the money clearly tells them otherwise.  At this point, the earnings of roughly $1,440,000,000 is a far cry of, "this game needs to go free-to-play."  There isn't a single game that can make money like that on a yearly basis.  Except for Call of Duty.

An old game with a large following, by that logic they should let Pokemon die because it's old. They should let Star Wars die because it's old, or they should let Lord of the Rings die because it's old. The game isn't dying fast enough to let it die, on top of that they usually grab 1.5 million subscribers on the release of every expansion. They're announcing a new expansion this year at, Blizzcon.

I didn't mean that. I meant if WoW is dying make a sequel or something. And yes each Pokemon game dies competitively after 2-3 years. Then a new one comes out with new moves and shit. To put it in Pokemon terms the wow base game would be your ruby/sapphire, fire red lead green and emerald your expansions. If the games in trouble move on to diamond and pearl.

but yah actiblizz would be mad to kill the warcraft franchise or even this game.

A simple misunderstanding then, but they're suppose to be announcing a new expansion at Blizzcon. They already registered the name, "The Dark Below" a couple of month prior.
