So Nintendo isn't doing as bad as we think

Post by DP on Mon Sep 09, 2013 4:29 pm

They have over this year risen 32% in shareholder size despite its shortcomings. Well, until today when they dropped 8% due to not being included in some stock listing in Japan. You know how stocks are.

Anyway, the point is that they're still pulling quite a bit even if the U is struggling.

The share increase, believe it or not, is not due to Pokemon. It's due to them moving to a new HQ.

Much to thank to the 3DS though. That increase as nothing to with the, Wii U.

From the 3DS of course, the Wii U operates at a 50 million loss.

Well, the 3DS missed its mark as well, so don't overattribute the profit to that. That'd be like saying the PSP kept Sony afloat in 2008, when the PSP was still clearly floundering by all means.

The PSP was selling to poorly to do that in 2008. That was around the time Sony started turning the PS3 around. I would say the combined sales of the PSP and PS2 kept Sony Computer Entertainment afloat. While the 3DS did miss it's mark, it was still all thanks to the 3DS.

Or the Wii 1. That still exists and hit 50m more software sales this year.

I guess you could still consider the Wii a viable source of income granted that they're extremely cheap to make. They probably spend around $70 to $80 making one Wii Unit. Without adding up pay-checks to that.

I think they also shipped like 6-8 million pieces of Wii hardware too so it's definitely viable. Not PS2 viable but viable nonetheless.

Shipped units and sold units are two different things though. How many of those 6-8 million units sold?

From what I understand, they were talking sold, not shipped. Just as there are at last check a few million extra Us out on shelves.

There's no way the sold 6-8 million units in the past year. The numbers don't add up for what was sold weekly. A year ago they were in the 98 million units. That would mean they sold 1.5 million to 2 million units out of 6 to 8 million units shipped.

It's the past year. A year ago, fiscally, was from April on. Not to mention you're probably talking vgchartz numbers which are always months behind. According to them, PSAS hasn't gotten a sale since January.

They're usually behind when it comes to software sales if they aren't popular titles. But, they're normally on top of things when it comes to console hardware.

Sometimes, but even then they mix up shipped and sold a lot. That's why the Wii hit so high last year, methinks. I trust Nintendo's financial info a lot more than what's more or less a wiki. If it were actual Nintendo itd be pretty shaky, but Nintendo wouldn't lie on their financial statements, since that's, y'know, illegal.

That said, they DID break 100m shipped last year IIRC, so adding a few million sales given its recent extended surge makes total sense to me

Technically it isn't lying if say "units shipped" because units shipped and units sold are two different things. The units shipped number is usually more impressive than what has actually sold. It's a loop hole in business to make yourself seem better without getting in trouble with, 'Johnny Law.'

The fiscal statement I read specified an increase in Wiis sold by the 6-8 million margin we'd already been hearing estimated by most analysts for a while before that. Hell, I laughed earlier in spring when we found out the Wii outsold the U by a factor of two since the latter launched (that was like 4-5 million for the Wii even back then). So I don't really know what to tell you lol
