F.E.A.R Online

What do you think?  I think that this can be a great experience and it's free-to-play.

Looks interesting! I may partake!

At the moment, I'm only playing MapleStory and Dragonball Online, as far as online games go, (and black ops 2, if that counts), but I can see myself giving this a go once it's officially released!

I'm waiting to see how they're gonna do this whole thing. Not the best idea if you can't scare any fans while they're playing.

Well, since pop-out scares aren't an option. I assume they'll make it a very scary atmospheric game. The kind of thing that would make even a group of people question if they should enter a room or not.

The main problem is that usually, co-op horror games become super unsatisfying with a group of people because they A) Get too distracted with each other to notice things B) Fuck around, making them just laugh at everything C) Feel more comfortable when they're with another person.

I really wish there was away around this. Mics get quieter as you walk away from others, separation, etc... There has to be some way to keep games like this scary.

C) can be fixed easily, there is no problem fixing C. The only other two that are a problem is A and B. C can be fixed by increasing the difficulty by double for every person in the room.

Because you're with another person does not mean that you won't get scared. Yes, in many cases, if you are sitting in the same room with a group of people, the scare factor will go down a little bit but I have seen lots of different scenarios where multiplayer (mostly coop) horror games can still keep that fear factor!

It really depends on the person as well. Some people get scared more than others no matter the situation. I do agree that if F.E.A.R is trying to create an online only game, they should add some new features to give it an even more scary feel to the game. Pyro's suggestion with the mic getting quieter/louder depending on the positioning of the players is a great idea.

Have you heard of the game Cry of Fear (mod?) of half life? It has co-op but from the lets players I have seen, the game still looks pretty damn freaky o.O

It definitely will be harder for them to keep the fear in this multiplayer game but it can be done.

I don't pay attention to the modding community, I only care about games made from nothing.

either way, its a game (mod) that instills fear with the use of co-op lol if people who made a mod can do it.. I sure hope developers can.

I think one of the main complaints that people have about co-op taking away fear in horror games are because of games like Dead Space 3 and Resident evil 5 and 6. They weren't (as) scary compared to their previous entries and so people blame it on the coop aspect when really, I think they wouldn't live up to the fear even without the co-op. You get what I mean?

While it probably wouldn't live up to that fear aspect even without co-op. Games like RE5, RE6 and DS3 would be harder without it.

Difficulty definitely adds a sense of fear. I know when I was playing the last of us and I was running low on ammo with a bunch of infected still blocking my path, it definitely increased my heard level. The sense of helplessness is a big part of scary games

Yeah, that is a good way to get fear across to the player. I still need to play The Last of Us.

Maybe it's scary, as in CoD "Zombies". I mean, not "Scary" per-se, but maybe it gives you the feeling of "Anxious Survival" - making fast decisions or else you'll get your face eaten, etc.
