Re: General Movie Discussion

ima gonna rant again cause theres two things that have piqued my interest yeah thats right ima gonna try and form a cohesive rant around 2 topics. and thats the adaptations of other media (Comics movies and games) and the portrayal of the mythos/characters and the advance planning of movies. and i'm going to use a lot of franchises so there could be spoilers for shit in here. so be warned.

When you look at the Marvel Cinematic universe, The Amazing Spider-Man Universe, Lord of the Rings etc etc. you notice shit. These movies paint an accurate portrayal of the Characters (ASM pulls from ULtimates, so that is an accurate Peter) and have/had  planned really far ahead, these plans revolving around the accurate portrayal of said characters. The Avengers only worked Because of the dynamic between these characters, the use of previously established characters (Hawkeyes lack of development outside the Thor cameo is irrelevant cause he did nothing, Hulk is the only one whos "Established status is debatable due to the Incredible Hulks ambiguous placing in the MCU.) and comic fans got behind it due to how accurate these characters are. with the Exception of Hawkeye who is still underdeveloped and thus we can't judge him EVERY single avenger is near identical to their Comic counter parts. but the story itself? nope nothing LIKE the comics at all. but it held up the Mythos VERY well. despite the fact it wasn't like the stories they were based off of they carried the proper tone and basic premise it needed. I.E. they made it work for Film without butchering the source, instead they made it their own. but 100% adaptations are not possible, my defence of the Mandarin Bait&Switch in IM3. hell imo its not so much accuracy of plot but the tone that needs to be right. HTTYD butchered the source material but captured the tone, its recognized by the author. on the flip side, Percy Jackson is not and it also butchered the source (And unlike HTTYD made it alot worse. i can see that conversation  Fox 1: "Whats the premise of these books " Fox 2:Some prophecy, he runs them true the wringer to get to the point of even finding out what it is." Fox 1 "Scrap that. Send em to a casino" Fox 2 "They are twelve" Fox 1 "Make em 17" Fox 2 "I got a bad feeling bout this" 1 YEAR LATER Fox 2 "Sir we in trouble!" Fox 1 "What is it?" Fox 2 "The prophecy wording in the PJO movies.is bad." Fox 1 "Wadda ya mean" Fox 2 "A half blood of the eldest gods shall reach 16 against all odds" Fox 1 "16....shit") and the tone and the themes and the characters (The brainey one Anabeth is an air head, Percys a Doche not a wiseass "Think Spiderman" and Grover..is great character but still all wrong) hell the main message, that being extrordinary is not always good, a message drilled into you in the first paragraph, fucking tossed out the window. clearly these movies were made without a plan. or authors consent to change or any consultation (Personally i blame fox. they took an ip that coulda cashed in on Harry Potter had they grown the child actors ala Harry Potter (A much easier feat for the US) but instead pushed it in a family action film direction with shitty action.)   and the second film is no better (MIST??? IN A SPRAY CAN!!!!!!!!!! OKAY IF YOU GET TO 3 SOMEHOW YOU BUTCHERED RACHEL ALREADY.)

X men is another X-Ample (LOLOLOLO) of a series made without a plan, its riddled with continuity errors, compounded by the recent to releases which build up to DoFP, a clever way to reboot the franchise and keep the actors they want i.e. Jackman, Stewart, Mckelland, McAvoy and Fassbender and keep the character development.it also means they could make first class and future movies without any reprecussions. so finally they have a plan.......but for now things are royally fucked up still further. however they carry the tone and get the characters right. the one time they didn't that characters portryal got the movie panned almost by itself (Don't fuck with Deadpool) and they weren't as tasteful as the horrible Mandarin switch. nothing seemed planned out. and now X-Force (And Wolverine of course......i'm not shitting you count)  is on the way to revisit Deadpool. its just like..what?

so i'm all for accurate portrayals and shit and advance planning for a universe........but not for a single franchise, at least not past 3.

take Kung Fu Panda. its going to Six. You will eventually see Kung Fu Panda 6. i dunno, i think A couple of the actors will be dead by then, given the 3 year a movie NECESSARY Cycle. especially with Dreamworks using new animation tools starting with HTTYD 2.  and the problem is, like X-Men, they announce the movies, they clearly don't have a plan. DC as well. they used MoS to set up a universe, yet they weren't going to do a universe if it flopped. also no characters developed until JLA besides supes and bats........if they don't pull from Arrow/Flash they bonned. i mean if they don't develop the characters the JLA movie will blow. if they develop them in movies, JLA won't arrive till AVengers 3! Which is a losing battle as it may well wrap up the Thanos arc.

You also have to take into account the changing market, i doubt KFP will be considered good after 4 and i doubt hat Superhero movies will be relevant by the time JLA has been fully developed, especially with the oversaturation we have now, (They hopefully will be but still)

so overall i fell that forming a planned narrative around basic premises is what movies should do. at least adaptations or potential sagas. but so many movies are going the complete opposite direction, butchering Source or entire ips to make a quick buck for a low budget film.

sorry if i rambled but i got tired as i wrote.
