Mario RPG Discussion

Basically what the title says. All future Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi hype and discussion should go here. Along with any SMRPG nostalgia as well.

The only gripe that I have about TTYD is that the Paper Luigi story was never adapted into an actual game... :(

I've only played Paper Mario. Loved 1, never did beat either The Thousand Year door or the one for Wii. Have yet to play Sticker Star (although I'd like to try it).

With Mario & Luigi series, I skipped it entirely.

Mario RPG Discussion

Post by DP on Wed Apr 24, 2013 10:45 pm

No, not just the SNES game. I'm making this thread because while my internet was out I got a ROM for Paper Mario (I played it once at like age 5 and didn't understand it), and long story short I loved it. (My only complaint was that there was no endgame, because I hadn't anticipated there not being one and as such didn't get a chance to go back and get all the Star Pieces.) I know there are two distinct series of RPG-type games with Mario now, so those are what I'd like to discuss. For starters, where should I go next in that series? Should I skip to the next Paper Mario game or should I go for the Mario % Luigi series next? And of course, any general discussion about the games is always welcome! (I could go into some good detail about how I wish the Flower Paradise - I believe it was called - was too short or how I hated that area's boss, even though Id id like the area itself.) Anyway, discuss.

Count, eat your heart out.

paper mario the thousand year door is one of the best rpgs ever made you wont regret playing it theres alot more optional stuff too super paper mario was still really fun but not as good and the 3ds paper mario ... it wasnt really an rpg more of a collectathon puzzle game
but the M&L series is great too (the first one was my favorite) the second game was oookay i didnt like it as much though the third game however was incredible and was even home to one of the most epic boss themes ever

It was over a month old, so by forum rules, I had the right to make a new thread!

lol, in all seriousness, I wasn't sure if you'd made one, so I made a new one. But I merged them now that I found the other.

Alright, that's cool. Also, you NEED to play The Thousand Year Door before playing the Mario & Luigi series. And when you do start the M&L series, GET BOWSER'S INSIDE STORY. what That is all, farewell.

Paper Mario 5 was *allegedly* confirmed by Nintendo on Twitter. The post was quickly deleted though, but 4chan (hence "allegedly") posted a screenshot.

Edit: Walmart just listed it literally right now.

I expected this since the series releases a new installment per generation, so I figured this might be the exception because of Sticker Star being the first portable installment and coming out so early.

I'm hyped for as this long as it's better than Sticker Star... Ugh, Sticker Star. It's not bad, but... God, the gameplay is just so underwhelming and tedious compared to the other games that I can't force myself to play past World 2. Intelligent Systems is a great developer and I loved Super Paper Mario in its own right, but it really needs to get out of the SEGA system of reinventing the gameplay system each game instead of keeping what isn't broke, aka, the free-roam, hub world, and turn-based with partners gameplay of the first game.

I hope to God it's good. I've heard such bad things about Sticker Star, which was mostly Miyamoto's doing. Since he's doing the mini-projects maybe he won't be involved in this one!

Re: Mario RPG Discussion

Yeah, it was Miyamoto. I even heard that he was the one who dumbed  down the story this time to just be a generic Bowser kidnapping Peach plot (even though Paper Mario 1 technically had both Bowser as the antagonist and Peach kidnapped, the journey and story progression is extremely fun and humorous that really helps sell why it's possible for Mario to have a classic trilogy R&C-depth story (and I would argue Super Paper Mario's plot had emotional elements near what you'd find in the Future games, surprisingly)). If he's not involved, praise the Star Spirits lol.

Re: Mario RPG Discussion

Post by Count Mario on Thu Dec 04, 2014 8:42 pm

It indeed is. But it sucks that we could have two awesome Mario RPG series but really only have one (Mario & Luigi). But I wouldn't mind a remake if it helped get Intelligent Systems (the irony of that name...) got their heads back on track for a sequel.

...Am I the only one who wanted a Paper Luigi game of that adventure he told stories about in TTYD? That would be freaking awesome.
