Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

I'm quite excited about this game considering there weren't a lot of JRPGs for PS3 here in the US and it displays a lot of promise considering it's being developed by Level 5 who are also working with Studio Ghibli.

Got my copy today. So far, I'm enjoying the gameplay considering it's quite complex and challenging. Almost got killed by the first boss lmao.
The environment and atmosphere is pretty charming, and I almost shed a tear at the beginning (darn you ghibli animation.) Otherwise, it's building up pretty slowly for me story-wise. But, I only just started so yeah. Time to ramp dis shit up.

Blade, how'd you like it overall? I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm not even past the first town (in the other world) yet. It seems REALLY deep though, which should turn out great.

I actually have not beaten or played the game since last January. But from what I remembered, once you get to a certain point in the beginning, it becomes rather challenging.

It does indeed. I spent ages farming monsters. It was tough.

Damn. I was hoping the comments about it being a grindfest weren't true. Ah well, I went in looking for a JRPG. I knew what I was getting into.

The great thing about this game is that you really don't ever need to grind if you're tactical about how you play. I'm ~20 hours in (more like 25, but I just spent the last five game hours in the casino), and I've had trouble on a single boss, one who was weak to a type I didn't have and couldn't find easily. Also one who I didn't know I'd fight, so that's really the reason why. I still beat him first try but it was closer than the other bosses. The graveyard boss, I shit you not, gave me five gold glims (essentially a max health plus a super attack, rarely found even once per battle). Biggest joke of a boss I've ever seen in a JRPG because of that.

The only bullshit is found in the casino. If you get above a 12, you are GUARANTEED to flip a 10, and they're always guaranteed to have a 19-20 on these hands. Pisses me off, but I got the Gold Tin Man lol.

Btw, any JRPG fan almost needs to play this game. One of the most unique JRPG stories I've played, especially for a "you're the destined hero" plot. Plus, it's got Pokemon in it. What else can you ask for?

Re: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

So I'm at the final boss...

Until now I thought it was a cakewalk. I never intentionally grinded (if I spent time fighting excess enemies, it was in an attempt to catch a specific familiar for a sidequest or something), though I did do almost every errand given almost immediately. For the final boss, I'm somewhere around 53ish for my levels (IGN recommends 85, most other people say 60-70), and it's not even difficult.

What it IS, is infuriating. The final boss highlights two of my biggest and only problems with this game: The AI and the priority. The AI aren't actually too bad in this fight but normally they're just awful. They make stupid decisions often (send out the level 1 familiar you have, yeah, that's not like fighting the elite four with a fucking pidgey at all or anything), and they die countless times. The second issue is THE problem with Ni No Kuni: If you cast a spell, it normally has a short warm-up timeframe, but enemies' spells don't. So if I cast the best spell I have, it'll take maybe two seconds to enter the actual spell animation, and if an enemy casts his spell, it'll likely start before mine. After the attack scene, suddenly my spell stopped warming up, but I lost the MP I used to cast it. This happens SO fucking often, and is the reason I died against the final boss. I couldn't switch to block because I'd already started my warm-up and he suddenly casts his "fuck you take 300 damage" spell and now all of my party is dead (even though I sent both into defend mode, the other two were just jerking off instead of blocking).

This boss fight had taken 30 minutes to get through the (pathetic) first two forms and half of the final one, and now I really just want to leave the final area, go grind against Tokos (apparently Tokos give you fucking 20 THOUSAND XP, enough to level me up from 49 to 52 in the final area) for 20 minutes until I'm overleveled as shit just to not have to deal with a lengthy bossfight. I've loved every boss fight in this game, and I've only ever died against this one, but the health bar on this fucker is just too damn big. It would've taken another 15 minutes at least to kill him, and it's not like that time is full of challenge so much as it's full of "cast spell, run, wait for recharge, repeat."

That said, I still fucking love this game. I'm disappointed it only took 40 hours to get to endgame (I'm at 38 now), since a lot of people said it took like 65 at least. I think I might just be really good/efficient at JRPGs or something though lol. I know my motivation will drop significantly after the plot is all wrapped up, but I'll still find the drive to Plat it somewhere. This game is one that deserves a Plat (and I'm glad I ended up buying it new, as well, because Level5 deserves every cent). Any JRPG fan has to have this under his/her belt (looking at you, dragon), because this is without a doubt the best PS JRPG this gen, and very likely the best one overall this gen (I won't put a definitive answer on that one though because some people REALLY fucking love Xenoblade).
